Description: Portrait of Joseph E. Kirkwood, Pacific University Class of 1898, the first Pacific graduate to go on to obtain a Ph.D. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. He became an Assistant Professor in Botany at Syracuse University in New York. Later, he served for 19 years in the Botany Department at the University of Montana. He died in his wife's arms while at a research station in Yellow Lake, Montana, after suffering a heart attack.; [back] J. E. Kirkwood; May 1919; State Univ., Missoula, Mont.
