Description: Portrait of Joseph E. Kirkwood, the first Pacific University graduate to go on to obtain a Ph.D. He graduated from Pacific in 1898, and received his Ph.D. from Columbia University. After graduation, he became an Assistant Professor in Botany at Syracuse University in New York. Later, he served for 19 years in the Botany Department at the University of Montana; he died in his wife's arms while at a research station in Yellow Lake, Montana, after suffering a heart attack.; [front] Joseph E.
