Portrait of Minnie Mary Gordon Gates
-
Description
-
A professional head and shoulders portrait of Minnie Mary Gordon Gates probably around 30 years old. She is wearing a dark blouse or dress with a high collar, closed in the front. He hair is twisted into a bun on top of her head with spit curls for bangs.
-
[back] Minnie came with her parents to Oregon in 1880, by train to San Francisco, and on up the coast by steamship. They told the story all their lives of the seasickness and rough crossing into the Columbia River. Minnie finished her education in Hillsboro schools, and taught a few terms of country school. She came from a family of writers and poets, doctors and ministers. She was a farmer’s wife, sold eggs and butter; did hand crafts and made quilts. She carred for in her home her father and mother-in-law and her uncle in each of their late years, she was kind and generous. She was 5’ 6” tall, and somewhat overweight most of her life. She had dark brown hair, always twisted into a bun of sorts, never out.
