Title

'To Clara: An Acrostic' poem with hidden message, 'Clara Emily Junkin, Oh Remember Me'
-
Description
-
This poem was composed by Cyrus Walker after he had separated from his first wife, Lucy Maria, but before they were legally divorced. Clara Junkin was enrolled as a student in Tualatin Academy in Forest Grove at the time that this letter was written. See similar acrostic poem written on the same day, "To Mary" (PUA_MS102_1873_1.pdf). See also another poem, "To Clara: Twilight Musings" (PUA_MS102_1875_2.pdf), written two years later. It is unclear whether Cyrus Walker ever gave these poems to Clara or Mary, since they remained in his papers. Perhaps he tried to give them to the girls, but they rebuffed him or returned the poems.
