Resolved, that this Board having heard the statements of Lieut. M.C. Wilkinson from the Hon. Sec'y. of War & Sec'y. of the Interior of the U.S.A. do hereby request his detail as Military Professor, as follows. Forest Grove Oregon, June 4 1879 The Honorable Secretary of War, Washington D.C. Sir, I have the honor to inform you that at a meeting of the Board of Trustees of Tualatin Academy & Pacific University held on this 4th day of June 1879, it was voted, in accordance with sections 1225 & 1160, Revised Statutes, to request the detail of 1st Lieut. M.C. Wilkinson, 3rd Infrantry, as Military Professor at this University. No other army officer is so detailed in this state. This university has the capacity to educate the requisite number of students. Lieut. Wilkinson has placed before the Board of Trustees the purpose and plan of the Interior Department to educate at some institution upon this coast a certain number of Indian Youth of both sexes, and the Board of Trustees make this application for the detail of Lieut. Wilkinson, with the understanding that this Board of Trustees incur no pecuniary liability thereby, and that the government pay all the necessary expenses attending the same. Resolved, that the President and Secretary of this Institution be and hereby are authorized to negotiate with the proper officers of the government for carrying into effect the propositions to supervise the education of Indian youth as per letter of date June 4th addressed to the Hon.
