Description

Two log cabins that once stood on Forest Grove pioneer Alvin T. Smith's land. The cabins were probably built in the 1840s or 1850s. One of the cabins was a residence; the other was a post office and store. The photograph was likely taken in the early 1900s. A note on the back from Margaret (Dolly) Hinman, who was from another local pioneer family, describes the cabins.

[back] These two log cabins were on donation land claim of Alvin T. Smith & were situated south of what we now know as Carnation. One (where the man is sitting) was the residence, the other was the first pst office and store of Forest Grove. Within memory of some of us old timers, some [?] of these log cabins remained on the Smith place, carried over with old time roses - calico (red with white stripes) and the [?] pink "Mission rose." - Margaret Hinman.
