The speechmaker, Harold Stassens, stands in front of a large United States flag. Mr. Stassens had a long political career, serving as governor of Minnesota and Pennsylvania and mayor of Philadelphia. Stassens was also a perennial candidate for the Republican Party Presidential nomination, unsuccessfully running in every presidential election cycle from 1944 to 2000, except for the 1956 and 1960 elections.
