At the time that this photograph was taken, this was a private home. It was originally built for the family of Sidney Harper Marsh, Pacific University's first president, who lived next door while it was being constructed. President Marsh died of tuberculosis shortly before this building could be completed in 1879. His widow Eliza Marsh and their children lived here after it was constructed.
Pacific University annexed the house and made it part of its campus in 1944, giving it the name "Knight Hall." It served briefly as a dormitory in 1946 and as the Phi Beta Tau's Fraternity house beginning in 1953. After that, it housed Pacific's School of Music until the Music Department moved to the newly completed Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center in 1993. After that time, it became the home of the Admissions Department. Knight Hall is known for the presence of a ghost named Vera, who is said to live in the attic.
