Sepia-toned image of a three-story European Manor home that appears to be in a rural combination of Romanesque and Beaux Arts architecture. The mansard roof features a guardrail along the roofline, and three dormers with rounded tops lie along the steeply sloped roof. Shutters grace most of the windows, and a small shed takes up the foreground of the image in front of the house. A man in a uniform with shoulder boards and a campaign hat stands in front of the shed, while men can be seen standing inside the smaller building and inside the open window at the left end of the house. The sign on the shed itself cannot be made out. Mary Morrissey Wunderlich, born in Washington County in the late 1880s, served in Europe as a nurse during World War I and is credited with taking this image. See WCMpic_015286 for what appears to be a front view of this house, and WCMpic_015288 and WCmpic_015299 for other images credited to Mary Morrissey Wunderlich.
Sepia-toned image of what appears to be a warehouse in a muddy field, with a hill covered in trees rising in the background. A young man in a military style uniform leans against the near corner of the building, his hands in his pockets. A sign reading 'Office, Red Cross, Base 18' extends perpendicular to the wall above the door just behind him. The landscape appears to be muddy and wet. Mary Morrissey Wunderlich, born in Washington County in the late 1880s, served in Europe as a nurse during World War I and is credited with taking this image. See WCMpic_015286, WCMpic_015298, and WCmpic_015289 for other images credited to Mary Morrissey Wunderlich.
Sepia-toned image of a three-story European Manor home that appears to be in a rural combination of Romanesque and Beaux Arts architecture. The mansard roof features a guardrail along the roofline, and a large statue is elevated from the arched, carved pediment of the central section. Two dormers with rounded tops sit at either side of the main section. Shutters grace most of the windows, and a balcony dominates the second floor of the central section of the house. Two men can be seen standing in one open door; the yard is packed dirt and appears to have a regular driving route across it. A crude flagpole has been erected in the middle of the yard in front of the house, made up of a straight, tall log with all the limbs chopped off. Mary Morrissey Wunderlich, born in Washington County in the late 1880s, served in Europe as a nurse during World War I and is credited with taking this image. See WCMpic_015289 for what appears to be a rear view of this house, and WCMpic_015288 and WCmpic_015299 for other images credited to Mary Morrissey Wunderlich.
Black and white image of a group of students standing in front of a school building. A board in the left foreground states that the students are '7-8-9 Grade'. The girls wear knee-length dresses or skirts, gathered in at the waist and generally with long sleeves. Most of the clothes are made of dark colored material, but at least two girls wear white or light colored dresses. The girls wear their long and pulled back into long pony tails tied with large ribbons. The boys wear suits or pants and jackets over work clothes. Some of the boys have brogans, while the girls all appear to wear button up boots. Several adults stand in the rear of the group; the men wear suits with ties and the women wear blouses and skirts and their hair is mostly worn in the full, 'Gibson Girl' style. The group stands before the entrance to a large building that features windows with both vertical and horizontal and diagonal panes.
Black and white image of a Carpenter Gothic church. The center section extends above two sides, which function as buttresses. Pointed arched windows are placed along the side, with a triple window in the front of the church. Small round windows line the visible wall above the side section roof, and carved bargeboards decorate the edges of the roof. A large, square tower dominates the forward corner of the building, featuring a rounded arch window above a wide doorway and culminating in a tall, narrow 8-sided steeple. Decorative woodwork adorns the tower, including two carved crosses. The main building and church tower still stand at the corner of 11th and Beech streets, though the upper portion of the main building has been removed, as has the tall steeple. A one cent stamp is affixed to the back of the postcard.
Black and white image of a man seated at a roll-top desk in an office. He wears a three piece suit, a tie, and a shirt with a stand-up collar, and his hair is combed to one side. A bowler hat sits on top of some stacked books on a desk behind him. The desk is covered with papers and heavy files sit on top of it. A candlestick phone is attached to a metal arm at the far side of desk, which appears to make it convenient for hands-free use. Oriental carpets of various sizes cover the floor, and hanging on hooks on the right of the desk are a straw hat, an overcoat, and a deerstalker hat with earflaps. A large diploma hangs on the wall above the desk, and another certificate sits on top of the back of the desk. According to the calendar on the wall behind him, it is June, 1913. On the window to the image left can be seen the letters 'Bagle' and 'Law,' indicating this is the Bagley and Hare law office in downtown Hillsboro, where it appears to have been on the second floor of a building. This image is part of a group contained in a tri-fold folder; see WCMpic_015279 and WCMpic_015281 for the other two images from that folder, and WCMpic_15282 for another image of the Bagley and Hare law office library.
Black and white image of four women in a title office. One woman wears a thick sweater and has two roses attached to her chest. Two others wear stylish, ankle-length dresses, and another has a white shirtwaist. The fourth woman sits before an old typewriter. They appear to be in a second story office, and the legend 'Washington Cou[nty] Abstract. Ti[tle] & Trust C[o.] can be made out in reverse on the window. This image is part of a group contained in a tri-fold folder; see WCMpic_015280 and WCMpic_015279 for the other two images from that folder, and WCMpic_15282 for another image of the Bagley and Hare law office library.
Black and white image of a man leaning back in his chair between two desks in an office. He wears a three piece suit and a bow tie, and his hair is combed to one side. A candlestick phone sits on the desk behind him, and both desks are covered with papers and books of various sizes. Oriental carpets cover the floor, and a leather couch can be seen at the far right of the image. Two famed diplomas hang on the wall, along with a framed collection that is probably Hare's class at the University of Michigan Law School. 'Washington County Abstract, Title, and Trust Co.' is lettered on the window above the couch. Hare was a native Oregonian and served in the state legislature for several terms. This image is part of a group contained in a tri-fold folder; see WCMpic_015280 and WCMpic_015281 for the other two images from that folder, and WCMpic_15282 for another image of the Bagley and Hare law office library.
Black and white copy image of a group of students gathered outside of a building. The boys mostly wear overalls or work shirts tucked into jeans. The girls have short sleeved dresses or skirts and sweaters. Groner Elementary was located just off the intersection of River Road and Scholls Ferry Road, in what is now a filbert orchard. Groner Consolidated School was built just down the road from the original school.
Sepia-toned portrait of young man in a suit with a vest and long chin whiskers. His hair is long and piled high in the middle of his head but otherwise combed back away from his face. He wears a large rosette with ribbons and star on the lapels of his coat. Such small 'souvenir' photos of well-known celebrities were popular in the 19th century as well as in modern times. This photo was included in a collection donated by a Forest Grove resident, Ruby Bamford. The Bamford family was from England, but lived in Illinois during the Civil War. They settled in the Gales Creek area in the early 1880s. It is not known whether the photos belonged to the Bamfords or to Mrs. Bamford's natal family before their donation. Sepia-toned portrait of a seated man wearing the uniform of a senior officer in the Union Army during the Civil War. Major General John A. Logan, known as 'Black Jack', was a veteran of the Mexican-American war and a successful lawyer before he resigned his congressional seat to serve as a volunteer in the Union Army. He was soon commissioned as a regular officer. Though it is doubtful that Logan himself autographed this particular image, such small 'souvenir' photos of well-known celebrities were popular in the 19th century as well as in modern times. Bamford's natal family before their donation, but since Logan himself was from Illinois, it is possible that whoever originally collected the photo served with or under Logan. Sepia-toned portrait of a young man in the frock coat of a junior officer in the Union Army during the Civil War. His coat has a single row of buttons and shoulder boards, and he wears both a belt and a sash at the waist. His hands are gloved, and one rests upon the pommel of a sheathed sword with its tip set on the ground beside of him. He wears a small mustache and muttonchops (sideburns). His forage cap appears to bear the insignia of the Infantry. He stands beside a small, square pillar and the background behind him is a romantic rural landscape. Sepia-toned portrait of a man wearing the uniform of a junior Union officer during the Civil War. He stands, one arm akimbo, the other resting on a pillar. His frock coat has shoulder bars and he wears a belt and a dark colored sash. What appears to be a Medical Service sword hangs from his belt, but the insignia on the front of his forage cap cannot be distinguished as to whether it is an 'M S' or 'U S.' His hair is long and curly, and combed back, and he wears a mustache and full muttonchops (sideburns). He stands in front of a soft, romantically styled rural background. Sepia-toned portrait of a young man in the uniform of an Infantry officer from the Union Army during the Civil War. His long frock coat has a single row of buttons and shoulder boards, and he wears both a belt and a sash at the waist. The front of his coat is unbuttoned, perhaps to reveal a token such as a handkerchief or scarf carried next to his chest. His right hand rest upon a sword, and he stands in a 'parade rest' stance. The brim of his Hardee hat is fastened up on his left and has a large feather on the right and an infantry insignia on the front of the crown. He stands against a plain backdrop with a United States flag draped and tied aside as if it were a curtain on his right. Black and white image of a group of workers in a laundry. Five men, a young boy, and three women in skirts and long sleeved shirts stand in a large room with a variety of laundry equipment. Baskets of clothing sit along the left of the image next to a counter and shelves of folded material. Clean shirts hang on a rack behind the group of people, and other clothes hang at the back of the room. A row of ironing boards and irons fills up the right side of the image, and a pile of wood can be seen outside of an open window.
Black and white image of a man standing in the aisle of a store filled with furniture. He wears a hat, pants, suspenders, and a shirt with a tie and leans against a pile of carpets. A display of Bissell carpet sweepers stands in front of the pile. To the left are rows of furniture, including a small icebox, a bench, and a row of bed frames. A woven 'rustic' bench stands next to the icebox, and tables, buffets, and other large pieces of furniture can be seen filling the room. Slat-back chairs hang from the ceiling on the left.
