Description

A letter to a congressional colleague by U.S. Congressman Les AuCoin requesting opposition to Representative Dougherty's proposed amendment to H.R. 4040, the Department of Defense Authorization Bill. In his letter, Congressman AuCoin explained how Doughtery's amendment called for the mandatory reporting to Congress of any steps taken to preserve the life of a fetus for all abortions that took place in hospitals under the jurisdiction of the Secretary of Defense. Congressman AuCoin stated how "This amendment's effect, pure and simple, is harassment of the Secretary of Defense, of military medical personnel, and of the women who use military medical facilities." AuCoin served in the Oregon House of Representatives (1971-1975) and in the United States House of Representatives from Oregon's 1st District (1975-1993).
